Ok, there is NO end to this government's treachery.

Russia invading Georgia, the Olympics, Maddy "spotted" in Belgium, what a fantastic time to announce THIS

Only the Times seems to mention it. Not really big news, eh?

Update: A few hours later, a post from Guido on the subject and The Times has taken this article off the online front page. It is not even on the front page of the "Business" section, to which it apparently belongs! Hush hush...the little people are not meant to know.

This lot really need banging up OH. Crooks. Every bloody one. No Tory will get a vote out of me unless they repeal a raft of legislation.

The bodies of military personnel who have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq are flown into RAF Brize Norton.

This comes under the jurisdiction of the Oxford Coroners Court.

One or two of the Coroners in Oxford were very critical of HM Government when it became clear that service men and women were dying because of a lack of equipment or poor equipment.

So the government then tried to get the inquests moved elsewhere.

Simple really and so much cheaper than paying for decent kit!

Lakelander,

I so want the names and addresses of those who instigated the move away from Brize Norton.

I'm no fan of the armed forces but I do believe that when someone dies being forced to keep Afghanistan American, their memory deserves the highest accolade.

Whoever diverted our war dead away from decent coroners is a vile traitor and I would like to know his name.

All very sinister.

We are being treated with contempt. Blood boiling.

It is SO Blood Boiling.

Pretty much fell out with a friend over this last night. We didn't argue, I just was silently horrified that he felt it was a good thing to stop public inquiries into why soldiers died, on the grounds of expense and the reality that soldiers are almost never properly equipped for war. However, this friend was both host and chef and I was too stunned to vomit my rage onto him.

Wow thats real man blogging Lillith I`m impressed , and threatened and deeply fearful...(oh dear)

Your host and chef sounds like a defeatist, lil.

The cost of properly equipping the sharp-end troops is not great, particularly if prioritised from annual defence spending (see cost of modernising MoD over the past few years, and weep).

The cost of a coroners court to do the decent thing by every dead soldier seems to me to be very modest indeed.

I can think of a hundred things to spend more public money on, and a thousand things which waste public money and should be scrapped immediately. Inadequate funds for best equipment is never an excuse, only an admission of incompetence by the logistics mandarins.

Yes, Idle. A defeatist.

The contempt. The billions squandered.

Send Des Browne out to live in Kabul. That would keep his mind focussed on the job.

Newmania, are you pre-menstrual or something?

*thoughtful*
you're right; the article would go unnoticed (and I don't even read the papers! *ashamed*), and everyone wake up one day to find they'd lost all their rights. No point even having an inquest, it'd seem...

It is terrifying here Eve. There is a data base this government has compiled of every child. Schools and hospitals are obliged to provide the information. But if you are a politician or a celebrity your child does not have to be included. This data base is called Contact Point and it will be accessible to 300,000 public sector workers (but not parents). No parent I have mentioned this to has heard of it but it is supposed to go live this september.

Wow wow wow... yes, sounds dangerous ;-) I guess I should be glad over here that record keeping is so bad that you could hide your child and nobody know (as opposed to someone else hiding your child, cos of knowing everything about them, and you not knowing...)
